Parental Alienation
Parental Alienation is when a parent attempts to completely remove the other parent from a child's life or severely limit the contact and relationship of the other parent with their child.
This is accomplished through various means. In some cases the alienating parent attempts to turn the child against the other parent through psychologically abusive means. The effect on the child is know as Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS). In other cases the means used are false allegations of domestic violence or sexual abuse. Often these methods are used in conjunction with a move-away request. In all cases, the goal is the same: virtual elimination of the other parent from the child's life through the manipulation of family law courts. Men and their children are most often the victims of parental alienation, and parental alienation is one of the core grievances of fathers' rights and men's rights advocacy groups.
Often the alienating parent is motivated by selfishness or the desire to hurt the other parent, but sometimes the motive is purely financial. If the non-custodial parent is denied visitation, the custodial parent is awarded for alienating the other parent with increased child support. This creates a perverse incentive for parental alienation and false allegations of abuse.
If you are a parent in a situation where the other parent is attempting to alienate you from your child's life, you need a lawyer familiar with parental alienation. Parental alienation cases are usually not cases that are mediated and settled because by their nature the other parent is uncooperative and unreasonable. These are cases are often hard fought battles where an aggressive attorney and competent legal representation is imperative.
